The Challenge

Alice

While browsing the downtown bookstore today with my younger sister, we came across 1001 Books to Read Before you Die. It was as if a simultaneous lightbulb went on in our minds, as we both dawned on the same idea: a challenge to see who could read the most books. Of course when we rushed home, we quickly made a list of what we had seen and decided how it would work. I had read about 14 more than she had, so it was decided that we would always subtract that number from my score. Then, we decided on the time period. Considering we’re both in school, and to give each other a sporting chance we decided it would be a rather epic 2 years. Even though I start this blog, I’m not optimistic that I will ever go through with it, or even read a single book off the list. Here’s hoping I’m wrong! I forgot to mention that the winner wins $10 :D

Here is a link to the entire list for those curious

I have read the following off the list (measly I know! I may have missed one or two though)
-Life of Pie, Yann Martel
-Alias Grace, Margaret Atwood
-Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice
-A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess
-To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
-The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger
-1984, George Orwell
-Animal Farm, George Orwell
-Le Petit Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
-The Big Sleep, Raymond Chandler
-Gone with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell
-The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway
-The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
-The Hound of the Baskervilles, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
-Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson
-Through the Looking Glass, and What LAice Found There, Lewis Carroll
-Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland-Lewis Carroll
-Wuthering Heights, Emile Bronte
-Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
-Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens
-Persuasion, Jane Austen
-Lord of the Flies, William Golding
-The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams
-The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman

I’m willing to answer any questions or provide any opinions on any of these books.

Here is a short-list of books I own that are on the list that I haven’t yet read (there are probably a lot more):
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
All the Edgar Allen Poe short stories
Frankenstein, Mary Shelley
Dracula, Bram Stocker
Of Human Bondage, William Somerset Maugham
Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
Nana, Emile Zola
Therese Raquin, Emile Zola
The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde
